North Hill Junction upgrade
This page is dedicated to providing information and updates on the works to upgrade the North Hill and Wickham Road Junction.
Latest Updates
6th August 2026 : Programme Update : We are now in the final weeks of the Phase 1 programme that will culminate in the opening of North Hill, and lifting of the Turnpike diversion, for 21st September 2026. Re-surfacing works are required as part of this final stage, some which will be taking place overnight between 17th - 31st August and require road closure (8pm - 6am). Further details are provided here in a copy of the letter being issued to residents and business within 0.5mile radius of North Hill.
The new signalised junction, pedestrian and cycle routes will be operational from 21st September 2026. Phase 2 will follow from mid September 2026 - February 2027 and entail works on the construction of a new bus lane on the A32 northbound under the motorway. Further details will be made available.
27th May 2026 : Openreach works : Works are due to be carried out by Openreach to relocate their existing chamber and provide a new duct route. To allow a safe working space for the contractors, parking on the road opposite house no 18 - 32 will need to be suspended and the pedestrian route diverted from 8th June for up to 5 days. More details are provided in a letter issued to residents adjacent to the planned works, copy here.
7th May 2026 : Programme Update : Whilst works have been progressing, unforeseen ground conditions relating to the thickness of the A32 road subsurface has resulted in additional excavation work and engineering design considerations. There has also been unexpected additional work to upgrade and relocate certain undergound services which has required involvement of the utility companies. Both issues have now been addressed. However, in combination, this has affected the overall programme timing. As a consequence, the main works will now extend to mid-September 2026. Removal of the current diversion at Turnpike and opening of North Hill is therefore anticipated by late September 2026. Follow on work, to create a new bus lane under the motorway to Welborne, will take place between October 2026 - February 2027.
Liaison with HCC M27 Junction 10 team continues and both sets of work are being co-ordinated.
Further details and plans are provided in a letter being issued to local residents and businesses this week. Please note - the issued hard copy letter contains a typo error relating to parking for residents at the bottom of North Hill between June and September 2026. The house numbers quoted in this section should read “no. 24 - 46” and not “no. 24 - 26” as stated. A corrected copy of the letter is provided here. All other details remain the same.
The FAQ has also been updated - please see the latest Edition 4 here.
Q1 2026 review: Work has been progressing in the first quarter of 2026 including removal of the existing roundabout, changes to the carriageway under the motorway, modifying ground levels, moving underground services and installing new duct work to traffic signals. Following feedback from the public, we added additional signs and traffic control measures to encourage use of the appropriate diversion route rather than turning right at Turnpike. Much of the works continues to be focused on the North Hill / Wickham Road junction. We have been keeping adjacent residents and businesses updated of specific activity affecting their location via letter, email or in person via our on-site team and responding to any on-going queries and concerns. We will be providing an update on the next phase of works very soon. Thank you for your on-going patience and co-operation.
Notice of Overnight works : we are required to undertake re-surfacing works and HCC have stipulated these works must be carried out overnight. Works are scheduled to take place over 2 nights between 21st April and 23rd April. Click here for details

Please park considerately to allow such access if needed.
4th October 2025 : Travelling north towards Fareham on the diversion route - please note that there is no right turn into either Old Turnpike or Serpentine Road. Signs are in place and drivers are asked to return via the roundabout ahead and then turn left into either Old Turnpike or Serpentine Road. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. The diversion route can be found here.

Overview and New Junction Layout
The upgrade will change the existing roundabout arrangement into a signalised junction with traffic lights. There will be a new dedicated bus lane and new pedestrian and cycle crossing points and links. A plan of the finished scheme can be viewed here.
Signalised crossings for pedestrians and cyclist have been designed across the new layout to enable safe crossing points east-west and north-south. You can find details on the plan here.
When complete, drivers will use the junction as a signalised junction with filter lanes and traffic lights enabling continued access north and south to Fareham via Wickham Road or North Hill but also access to and from Furze Court. Details of vehicle movement at the junction can be found here.
